Exhibited: "Mythos Rome, Das antike Fundament des barocken Staates", Schloss Eggenberg, Graz 2009, no. 20 (as "Prague court painter, c. 1580" and "Portrait of Emperor Rudolf II as Jupiter").
We are grateful to Prof. Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Princeton, for his kind assistance in cataloguing the present painting. He dates it to c. 1560–70 and compares it to another painting attributed to the school of Scorel in the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem (cf. M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Paintings, vol. 12, no. 306, pl. 167).
