In a series of oil paintings from 2008/9, Altenberg tackles the theme of the crucifix. From a conversation with his artist friend Georg Dokoupil about depictions of Christ according to the Christian tradition, the idea of an exhibition on the subject of “The Man on the Cross” arose. It was to include works by Brus, Muehl, Nitsch, Krystufek, Strba, Rainer, and others.
In his series, Altenberg reduces his method to horizontally and/or vertically aligned colour fields. They create the impression of spread wings or cloud formations, which, however, is thwarted by the extreme use of colour. ...
