Massimo Campigli *

Massimo Campigli * - Modern Art

(Berlin 1895–1971 St. Tropez) ‘Vetrine’, signed and dated Campigli 62 with title verso, inscribed and dated M. Campigli ‘Vetrine 1962’, oil on canvas, 89 x 116 cm, with confirmation verso from Guiseppe Zanini and gallery stamp from the Galleria Zanini, Rome 1963, framed, (PS)

Provenance:Galleria Zanini, Roma The female figure is a central theme in Massimo Campigli’s painting, as it has been in Italian painting since the Renaissance. In his work, ‘Vetrine’ dated 1962, Campigli modifies the depiction of the female nude from an organic to an abstract form, almost reminiscent of a geometrically-shaped vase. Arranged alongside one another and overlapping each other, the figures are encompassed by a window frame - as if in a shop window. Campigli makes use of an archaic formal language in this painting, which is only intensified by the earthy coloration used in the image, reminiscent of ancient wall painting. Campigli thus spans figurative and abstract painting in ‘Vetrine’, unifying this with aspects of an ancient formal language and coloration.
