On the stretcher an old label inscribed Sagorsk (after the collapse of Communism it reverted to its former, pre-1930 name of Sergiev Posad) – a city around 100 km north of Moscow, with this wonderful Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius dating back to the 15th-18th century. Sagorsk is one of the most important religious centres for the Russian church, a place of pilgrimage. The workshop of the UdSSR artistic fund, a structure subordinate to the Union of Russian Artists, has existed since the mid-1950s.The work here was probably executed sometime between the mid-1950s and 1970.
