Gerard Hoet (Zaltbommel 1648–1733 The Hague)

Gerard Hoet (Zaltbommel 1648–1733 The Hague) - Old Master Paintings

A bacchanal, oil on panel, signed lower left, oil on panel, 32 x 41 cm, framed

Provenance:
collection of Countess Leonie Lanckoronska, b. Countess Potocka, Vienna (1821–1893).

Gerard Hoet, son of a glass painter, was particularly well-known for his small-format, southern landscapes with Biblical and mythological figural groups. After long stays in The Hague, Paris and Brussels, the painter settled in Utrecht. In 1697 he founded a drawing academy there with Hendrick Schoock. Hoet’s painterly style is marked by a fine application of paint, which is reminiscent of Leiden Feinmalerei. His figures betray the influence of the French painting that Hoet had studied in Paris. There are comparable mythological scenes by Hoet at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and in the Norton Simon Collection, Pasadena.
