Gennaro Greco, known as il Mascacotta (Naples 1663 – 1714)
View of Vesuvius from the harbour mole at Naples with bystanders, oil on canvas, 58 x 115 cm, framed
We are grateful to Dr Ermanno Bellucci for pointing us to the attribution based on a photograph. Gennaro Greco was active, above all, as a painter of ruins in the style of the better-known Leonardo Coccorante. He played an important role in the development of ideal Neapolitan vedute and continued the traditions of Viviano Codazzi and Ascanio Luciani in his set-like architectural scenes. A picture similar to this painting was auctioned at Blindarte, Naples on 19 May 2004 (lot 266).
