Grotesque scene with animals and stylised figures in a kitchen, oil on canvas, 90 x 120 cm framed
The Maestro della Fertilità dell’Uovo can be seen as a follower of Faustino Bocchi (1659–1742). The artist was active in Brescia and bore this mysterious name thanks to his picture, La fertilità dell’uovo (Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin).
His works are characterised by his rejection of perspective and spatial effects.
The figures, often represented in profile, stand out from the dark, mostly flat backgrounds, appearing almost to be cut out. Animals and dwarfs both feature as protagonists, carrying out activities similar to humans.
His pictures are marked by a tireless, frenetic and disorganised activity and reactions, as well as a balance between the absurd and the grotesque.
