Still life with peonies, roses, lilies, tulips, narcissi and other flowers, oil on canvas, 92.9 x 68.4 cm, framed
We are grateful to Professor Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome, for identifying this painting as an authentic work by Vogelaer.
Karel van Vogelaer was one of the most important flower painters of the 17th century. Little is known about his artistic training. He settled in Rome around 1683, where he quickly gained admirers of his powerful, loose but detailed painterly style. Patrician families, such as the Pallavicini, acquired his paintings and artists, such as Carlo Maratti soon began to collaborate with him. This painting may be compared to paintings by Vogelaer held by the Swedish National Museum, Stockholm, and at Felbrigg Hall/Norfolk. The pendant to this painting was auctioned at the Dorotheum, Vienna, on 18.04.2012 as lot 824.
