View of the Quirinal in Rome, oil on canvas, 51.5 x 33.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
European private collection.
We are grateful to Prof Giancarlo Sestieri for suggesting an attribution to Jacopo Fabris, having examined the picture in the original (written communication).
Fabris was active as a theatre painter and was feted for his stage sets. In his youth, he worked in Rome and was very probably in contact with Canaletto, who had arrived in the city around 1719. This composition depicting the Palazzo del Quirinale and the Dioscuri in the square alongside an elegant coach is particularly close to one of Canaletto’s compositions (Sammlung Neave, Wexford).
