Willem van Herp

Willem van Herp - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1614–1677) The discovery of Erichthonius by the daughters of Cecrops, oil on copper, 59 x 48 cm, framed

Willem van Herp was a respected member of the Antwerp community of painters. Clearly influenced by the great masters of the preceding generation, such as Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens, which was particularly evident in his conception of figures, his largely small-format works on copper bear testimony to a confident artistic persona, especially in the compositional schemata, the free, broad brushstrokes with which he applied colour and the deft drawing of his completed works. This painting is typical of the relatively small group of mythological themes within his oeuvre. His figural draughtsmanship and the layers of paint laid down in fine glazes, which lend a particular plasticity to his work and the elegant, polished quality of his surfaces, are evidence of his position within the Antwerp School. Depicted here is a scene rather rare in the canon of Baroque iconography, the discovery of the snake-legged boy, Erichthonius by the daughters of King Cecrops. Erichthonius would later become the first King of Athens.
