Lombard School of the 17th century
St. Ursula with a palm leaf, oil on canvas mounted on, 54 x 48 cm, framed
Provenance:
European private collection.
According to Prof Filippo Maria Ferro this painting is close stylistically to works by Panfilo Nuvolone (Cremona 1581 – 1651 Milan?), who was the father of Carlo, Francesco and Giuseppe Nuvolone, who exercised great influence as painters in the Lombardy region, anticipating the Baroque style after the plague of 1630 (see F. M. Ferro, Nuvolone / una famiglia di pittori nella Milano del 600, Edizioni dei Soncino, Soncino 2003). Panfilo took the lead from Malosso and later Camillo Procaccini in his work, enjoying great success thereby and conveying Counter-Reformatory ideas in his paintings. This painting of St. Ursula has direct associations with Counter-Reformation ideals and is close to many works in Panfilo’s oeuvre.
