Giancarlo Sestieri has confirmed the authenticity of this painting (written communication dated 27 March 2007). He compares the painting with a monogrammed work by Moucheron, entitled The Tiber, the Castel Sant’Angelo and St. Peter’s (Sotheby’s, London, 16 December 1999, lot 85). Sestieri emphasises the similarity of the composition of the views, with their large Roman ships and the similar figural types.
