Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no. 71.138);
1956–1964 on loan to the Virginia Museum;
Christie’s, New York, 18.6.1982, lot 38.

We are grateful to Pieter Roelofs for pointing us in the direction of this attribution. This painting was presumably executed in the early 1670s in the workshop of the brothers, Jacob and Abraham Storck. The edifice on the right-hand side is based on the façade of the Loggia delle Benedizioni at the Lateran Palace. It occurs in several works by and after Abraham and Jacob Storck. A drawing by Jacob Storck, dated 1671, featuring this composition, was auctioned at Christie’s Amsterdam on 15 November 1993 (lot 64); a second drawing is held by the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts in Brussels.
