Genre scene before a convent, oil on canvas, 40 x 53 cm, unframed
Certificate:
Prof Giancarlo Sestieri (31 May 2012)
Prof Sestieri considers this architectural capriccio to be an early work by Domenico Gargiulo, with close links to his painting, Fiera (Museo Correale, Sorrento). The influence of Jacques Callot and his Fiera della Impruneta is evident in the latter work, which must have been a source of inspiration for the young Gargiulo. This painting represents an important element of the early work by Gargiulo, about whom very little is known. It can be compared with the Festa al Santuario della Madonna dell’Arco (Collezione Amodio, Naples).
