Jacob van Spreeuwen (Leiden 1611-after 1650)

Jacob van Spreeuwen (Leiden 1611-after 1650) - Old Master Paintings

Allegory of Vanitas, signed lower left: J. v. spreeuwe f., oil on panel, 67 x 52 cm, framed

Provenance:
formerly Galerie Arnot, London.

Literature:
W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, vol. VI, Landau 1983, p. 3743, no. 2445 (incorrectly given there as “oil on canvas”).

This painting is close stylistically to a painting by Spreeuwen in the collection of Dr Alfred Bader, now held by the Queen’s University, Kingston/ Ontario, (see W. Sumowski, op. cit., p. 3633, no. 1650a, where the author attributes the work to Willem de Poorter). Jacob van Spreeuwen was one of few Feinmaler and genre painters from Leiden, who was influenced by Rembrandt, as were Gerrit Dou and Quirin van Brekelenkam. He depicted the same subject matter as his painter colleague from Leiden, Jan van Staveren.
