This painting by the Leeuwarden court painter, Wybrand de Geest, who was trained by his father and later in the workshop of Abraham Bloemaert, may be dated to the period around 1630. It is close stylistically to several portraits securely attributed to the artist, such as the portrait of his wife, Hendrickje Uylenburgh, a niece of Rembrandt’s wife, Saskia (Friesisches Museum, Leeuwarden, inv. no. FM 1948–39).
