Emilian School, 17th Century
Saint Mary Magdalene, oil on canvas, oval, 97 x 72 cm, framed
We are grateful to Andrea Emiliani for suggesting an attribution to Guido Cagnacci (1601–1663) for the present painting (written communication). Emiliani considers the painting to be a mature work by Cagnacci that was probably executed during the artist’s time in Venice, where he lived and worked between 1648 and 1660. The present Magdalene would thus date from a time when Cagnacci completed important commissions for which he received great recognition and admiration, such as his Rape of Europa (Collezione Molinari Pradelli, Bologna).
