The Resurrected Christ, oil on copper, 29.2 x 22.6 cm, framed

Gerard Seghers was a student of Abraham Janssen. Having been appointed master of the Guild of Antwerp in 1608/9, Seghers went on an extensive study tour to Italy and Spain between 1611 and 1621. He was mainly interested in works by Caravaggio and his school. In Rome, the artist studied the paintings of Caravaggio, Bartolomeo Manfredi, and Gerard Honthorst. Subsequently, he sojourned in Spain for a lengthy period of time and then returned to his native country, where he created works based on his studies. As is reflected in his pictureshe took to the style of Rubens around 1625. Seghers painted numerous altarpieces for churches in Flanders and Cologne, as well as for various institutions of the Jesuite order. His masterpiece, an Adoration of the Magi, is in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges (1630).
