Venetian School, circa 1570
Double portrait of a man and a woman, oil on canvas, 109 x 123 cm, framed
The present painting has been traditionally given to Paolo Veronese, and a tentative attribution to Francesco Montemezzano (Verona c. 1540 – Venice after 1602) has been suggested.
Montemezzano was part of Paolo Veronese’s large family workshop in Venice, where he worked along side Veronese’s brother Benedetto and his sons Carlo and Gabriele Caliari as well as various other assistants and apprentices, including Veronese´s nephew Alvise dal Friso.
The female sitter in the present composition is sumptuously dressed and shows gestures of affection. The interest in the depiction of finery is strongly reminiscent of Veronese’s portraiture.
