Dirk Dalens the Elder (Dordrecht 1600–1676)

Dirk Dalens the Elder (Dordrecht 1600–1676) - Old Master Paintings

A pair of landscapes featuring scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses: Diana Discovering Callisto’s Pregnancy and Diana and Actaeon, the first picture signed at lower left: D. Dalens f., oil on panel, each 60 x 90 cm, framed (2)

Dirk Dalens was trained in the workshop of Moses van Uyttenbroeck. From 1627 he lived in The Hague, where he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1632. It seems that the members of the court appreciated his works and he received a payment of 1,200 guilders for “mantelpiece pictures” for Noordeinde Palace, documented in 1648. He was one of the co-founders of the Hague “Confrerie Pictura”. The present two paintings, hitherto unpublished show Dalens as a sensitive landscape painter. The architectural set pieces in the style of classical antiquity and the subjects borrowed from Ovid attest to his closeness to Uyttenbroeck and the Pre-Rembrandists.
