Exhibited:
Brescia, Palazzo Martinengo, Lo splendore di Venezia, 23 January – 12 June 2016, no. 37

The present painting is one of Chilone’s late works and it is characterized by the originality of the chosen compositional location, as well as by the use of colour. The loggia of the Ducal Palace is depicted on a Summer’s day and in the distance is the island of San Giorgio, part of the Giudecca, the Church of the Zitelle and the Punta della Dogana. Figures are portrayed: on the left, three gentlemen and on the right side of the painting a lady and a young girl are listening to the explanations of a young man flanked by a dog.

The present painting was executed by Chilone following his return to Venice in the first half of the nineteenth century, after a period spent in nearby Udine. In the last phase of his career Chilone focused almost exclusively on the creation of small and mid-sized paintings, all depicting Venetian landscapes and views.
