The present landscape is inspired by precedents of the seventeenth century, although these are transformed in Locatelli’s vision, while the figures are conceived in the Salvator Rosa taste.
According to Andrea Busiri Vici, the present work belongs to a small group of Locatelli canvases which stand apart from his ordinary work for their quality, inventiveness and scope of vision such as, the Landscape with washerwomen at a fountain (Private collection, Viterbo) or the two Landscapes in Latium of the Milwaukee Museum, Wisconsin (see: A. Busiri Vici, Andrea Locatelli e il paesaggio romano del Settecento, Rome 1976, nos. 17, 173,174).
