Lot No. 325 -

Johann Hörner

Johann Hörner - Old Master Paintings

(Edebo 1711–1763 Copenhagen)
Clementines in a glass bowl and a glass jug,
signed and dated lower left: J: Hörner/p:1752,
oil on canvas, 57.6 x 47.3 cm, framed

Works by this artist rarely appear on the market. As he infrequently signed his compositions, many of them have been attributed to other artists, including Jean Siméon Chardin. Hörner came from Sweden and was initially active in Stockholm before his Pietistic conviction forced him to emigrate to Copenhagen. As he was denied the position of a court painter, Hörner concentrated on portraits of the rising bourgeoisie. His portraits resemble works by Carl Gustav Pilo and Balthasar Denner. Hörner was also known for night interiors in the manner of the Leiden Fijnschilders. Only a few still lifes by his hand are known. A comparable work was with Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, and sold on 6 December 2006 as lot 2014.
