![Jan Boeckhorst - Old Master Paintings Jan Boeckhorst - Old Master Paintings](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A171017/normal/jan-boeckhorst-460288.jpg)
(Münster 1603/05–1668 Antwerp)
Portrait of Ambrosius Capello (1597–1676), Bishop of Antwerp,
oil on panel, 71 x 57.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
sale, Lempertz, Cologne, 18 March 2015, lot 7, as attributed to Bartolomeo Ignazio Capello (1689–1768)
Bishop Capello can be identified through the comparison of the present painting with a portrait engraving by Philips Fruytiers dated 1650. In the engraving he looks a bit younger so that the painting should be datable to the years 1655–60. Capello entered the Dominican Order in 1612 and spent many years studying theology in Douai, Salamanca, eventually receiving his doctorate in Leuven in 1627. Capello was appointed as bishop of Antwerp in 1652, but he was not consecrated until 1654. As bishop he founded a retirement home for elderly priests and on his death gave all his possession to the poor. His ornate tomb in Antwerp Cathedral was designed by Artus Quellinus II.
