We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the authenticity of the present painting. He will include it in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Stalbemt’s paintings.
Stalbemt was, like possibly no other artist in the immediate circle of Jan Brueghel I, able to emulate a variety of stylistic tendencies of contemporary painting in Antwerp. Sometimes his hand is only recognizable in discernible details. Thus, Klaus Ertz forthcoming catalogue raisonné is fundamental in understanding the great significance of the artist.
In the present landscape, Stalbemt draws inspirations from the work of Jan Wildens, Sebastian Vrancx, and Jan Brueghel I.
