Francesco del Brina

Francesco del Brina - Old Master Paintings

(Florence circa 1540–1586)
Madonna and Child with a Saint,
oil on panel, 87 x 67.5 cm, framed

After his apprenticeship with Michele Tosini, Francesco del Brina specialised in compositions intended for private devotion. The present panel is an excellent example of his mature period. Brina interpreted Mannerism using a classical language of form. Mannerism had been born from the “maniera moderna’s” response to naturalism as a self-confident, elegant approach marked by a high degree of refinement and a bold style. During the late sixteenth century, when the style was spreading in Europe, the movement developed in Italy in line with the demands of the Roman Catholic church, which at the time of the Reformation sought to tie believers to the church all the more urgently and called for an art that would convey the true content of faith.
