Karl Raupp

Karl Raupp - 19th Century Paintings

(Darmstadt 1837–1918 Munich)
Crossing Lake Chiemsee in a storm under the aegis of a guardian angel, signed, inscribed K. Raupp München,
oil on canvas, 100 x 65 cm, framed, (Rei)

Catalogued in:
Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus 1979, vol. II, 1, p. 365, no. 54.

After having studied briefly in Darmstadt and Frankfurt, Karl Raupp moved to Munich where he became a student of Carl von Piloty (1826-1886).

He later worked as a professor in Nuremberg, before returning to his alma mater, which had offered him a teaching position. Raupp, who considered himself a plein air painter, would take study trips to the country with his students in order to paint nature as close to reality as possible. It is during one of these trips that he visited the Chiemsee for the first time; an experience which would shape his oeuvre. The lake, the Frauenchiemsee island and especially its inhabitants and their daily lives became a favourite subject of his. Raupp even organised for one of the Chiemsee’s typical flat-bottomed-boats (Kahns) to be transported to his atelier in Munich.

Although he is considered a ‘Chiemsee Maler’, in his works the lake is always in the background, with the locals as protagonists. Here he brings two of his favourite subjects together: motherly love and figures escaping a storm.
