Lot No. 663

Nicolas Desportes

(Busancy 1718–1787 Paris)
A still life with fruits, dead ground game and a Chinese dish, oil on canvas, 73 x 92 cm, framed,

Nicolas Desportes, who was trained in the workshop of his uncle, Alexandre François Desportes, continued the latter’s work in similarly elegant compositions. The style of his brushwork developed more freely, however, so that some of his still lifes with fruit are almost reminiscent of the early work of Oudry. The present, very decorative still life makes it clear why Desportes enjoyed such popularity amongst the well-to-do patrons of the Ancien Régime, because he brings together here some of the important set elements of the aristocratic life. In 1723 Desportes was accepted at the Académie Royale. He was rumoured to have the protection of Louis XV. He would later direct the Manufacture Royale de Sèvres on the death of his master.
