Although he was one of the most important artists of the 18th century from The Hague, Jan van Gool is today better known as an art critic and theoretician than for his painterly work. As an artist he focused on landscapes with cattle, that is on a visual typology that had already achieved some considerable notice in the work of great masters, such as Paulus Potter and Adriaen van de Velde.
