Dietrich, who was trained by Alexander Thiele was appointed court painter in 1741 and professor at the Dresden Academy in 1744. Like very few other artists, Dietrich was able to imitate to perfection the techniques and expressive means of Italian, French and Dutch painting. Alongside idealised landscapes and battle scenes, he produced decorative and gallant scenes. A comparable pair of painting was sold at Christie’s, London, in July 2010.
