Certificate/perizia: We are grateful to Dr Everett Fahy, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for identifying this painting as the work of Guidoccio. Siamo grati al Dottor Everett Fahy del Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York per aver identificato il dipinto come opera di Guidoccio di Giovanni Cozzarelli.
Dr Everett Fahy was only able recently to identify this work as that of the Sienese master, Cozzarelli. In 1939 Bacci researched his biography and his career for the first time and was able to throw full light on the life of this important artist of the last quarter of the 15th century. The iconography of the rediscovered work allows a dating to Siena and the second half of the 15th century, which alongside Florence was still the most important centre of the arts in the early Renaissance. St. Katharina Benincasa of Siena (1347–1380) stands in the centre of the lower row of saints, directly below the Madonna, and to her right she is framed by the Alexandrian St. Catherine, St. Bernhard of Siena (1380–1444), St. Jerome, Francis of Assisi and St. Clare. St. Lawrence stands to the left of the Sienese Katharina and St. Bernhard along with the saints Catherine of Alexandria, Christopher, Sebastian and Dorothy. Guidoccio di Giovanni Cozzarelli was apprenticed to Matteo di Giovanni who dominated Sienese art in the middle of the century.
