Lot No. 556

Barend Gael

(Haarlem 1630–1681 Amsterdam)
Landscape with hunters and their horses on a falcon hunt, signed lower right: B. Gael, oil on panel, 47.5 x 63 cm, framed,

The present landscape is an extraordinarily well executed work by Barend Gael, presumably from the early part of his career circa 1660. It belongs to the series of landscapes in a larger cabinet format close in style to the paintings of Philips Wouwerman (see Gael’s paintings in the City Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham). The paintings bear witness to the fact that as A. Houbraken (De Groote Schouburgh der Nederlantse Konstschilders en Schilderessen etc., vol. III, 1753, p. 321) explained, Barend Gael was apprenticed to Philips Wouwerman. As one of the most successful painters to succeed Wouwerman, Gael enjoyed great popularity amongst contemporary collectors. His elegant compositions nearly reached the level of his master with their precise depictions of horses.
