A now lost certificate from Prof Ingvar Bergström was issued in respect of this work. We are grateful to Drs Fred G. Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for confirming the attribution of this painting to Isaac Vroomans. Vroomans was nicknamed, “Snake painter”, since these creatures played an important role in his sous-bois still lifes. W. Bernt writes about them, “In these pictures there is a mysterious tension between the plant life depicted in the evening light and the creatures threatening one another. They are thematically similar to the works of O. Marseus van Schrieck...”.
