Hergenröder, who ran a drawing schook in Offenbach, specialised in grotto pictures of this kind and enjoyed great success with them. In ‘Thieme-Becker’ it says, “His pictures, always small in format, tend to depict caves and vaults richly populated with figural groups, after the taste of the painter, Cuylenburg. Depicted are soldiers, robbers, treasure seekers, as well as bathing nymphs or statues in fantastical surroundings...”. Hergenröder’s pictures were acquired by museums in Dessau, Frankfurt/Main and Kassel.
