We are grateful to Professor Thomas daCosta Kaufmann, Princeton, for identifying the artist.
A comparable painting by Pohm with a depiction of Venus and Adonis is to be found in the collection of Alfred Bader in Milwaukee. This picture, and consequently also our picture, belongs to a group of similar works which were earlier attributed to Hans Strohmeyer (see ‘Venus and Adonis’ in the National Gallery, Prague). Kaufmann, who has examined this group in his publication on the Prague School (The School of Prague, Painting at the Court of Rudolf II., London 1988, p. 286), includes our Venus and the one in the Bader collection in this body of work. He was able to identify the artist on the basis of a monogramme, ‘HCP’ found on one of these works. Whether he worked directly for the Emperor or was in the circle of a painter influenced by court artists, he was not able to ascertain
