Provenance: Northern German private collection; Dorotheum auction, 29 September 2004, lot 38; 

Certificate: We are grateful to Dr Everett Fahy, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York for pointing us towards Luca Antonio Busatti known as il Maestro della Incredulità di San Tommaso. Dr Fahy writes, ‘This may be the same picture as the one formerly in the Sedelmeyer collection published by Anchise Tempesti, ‘Il Maestro veneto dell’Incredulità di San Tommaso’, Antichità Viva 23’ (March-April 1974), p.17, fig.12.’ (Dr Fahy’s letter was given to the painting’s purchaser at the Dorotheum auction of 29 September 2004, but it has been mislaid. It is published in the catalogue of 2004.
