(Antwerp 1584–1669 Gent), attributed to
Venus and Cupid, oil on panel, 65 x 50 cm, Netherlandish frame from the first half of the 17th Century
On the reverse a bookplate of Luigi Aldovrandi Marescotti di Viano (1876–1945) and a customs stamp. In a written comment supplied in 2008, Professor Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann compared the present painting with Gaspard de Crayer’s Juvenile Virgin Mary and Her Parents (The Age of Rubens, Boston/Gent 1993, p. 365). Other art historians have regarded the painting as a work by the Prague School and have related it to such painters as Hans von Aachen, Bartholomäus Spranger, or Hans Rottenhammer. However, Professor DaCosta Kaufmann recognizes a prevalence of stylistic elements from Rubens’s circle, which prompted him to attribute the painting to Gaspard de Crayer.
