The passion of light
Zumtobel has taken an idea jointly developed by architect Zaha Hadid and Patrick Schumacher and brought it to life as the VORTEXX lighting sculpture. Zaha Hadid was interviewed about her visions of light and colours.
What was the inspiration of developing Vortexx? ZH: The impressive design was inspired by the vision of an infinite ribbon of light. The charismatically curved lines conjure up a double helix that appears to flow in perpetual motion - weightless, vivid and brilliant. This impression of fluidity is emphasised by the dynamic lighting"™s vibrant luminosity. The light colour of the chandelier changes continuously and almost imperceptibly; from red to green to blue, the spellbinding interplay of colours creates an exciting three-dimensional space drawing the eye in time and again.
How was it possible to bring this idea to life? ZH: The 2 m high and 1.5 m wide luminaire body has been implemented using more than 60 individual mouldings seamlessly connected into a 12 m long cord. The chandelier can be fixed flush with the ceiling using a special suspension system. A translucent acrylic glass diffuser fits perfectly into the glass fibre-reinforced polyester luminaire with its high gloss finish to provide uniform light distribution and optimum colour mixing. RGB power LED modules, which produce indirect light in various hues, enable precise adjustment of colours; combined with the LUXMATE EMOTION lighting management system, an infinite variety of lighting scenes can be controlled and programmed.
How influences the chandelier moods, emotions and the well-being of people? Is this an important matter for your handling with light? ZH: A radiantly bright line of direct light bursts through the underside of the chandelier to penetrate the luminous interplay of colours. It precisely follows the spiral design of the chandelier, spectacularly emphasising its elegantly fluid design. Due to this resonance of vibrant lines combined with sensually coloured and brilliantly white light, VORTEXX imparts a sense of harmonious illumination to its surroundings, creating a lasting feeling of well-being on whoever it shines on.
