Both Neeffs the Elder and Neeffs the Younger were important architectural painters. They limited their subjects to three buildings, or types of buildings, including the Cathedral of Antwerp. Their collaboration over many years makes it difficult to distinguish between their individual hands, as both worked together with the same figure painters. The figural staffage in their compositions mainly served to illustrate spatial proportions and distances.
