(Lier 1612–1659 Antwerp)
The goddess Diana hunting,
oil on copper, mounted on a stretcher,
46.5 x 63 cm, framed
Frans Wouters was initially apprenticed to Peter van Avont in Antwerp, before becoming a student of Rubens in 1634, the same year he joined the Guild of Saint Luke, whose dean he would eventually become. His talent earned him prestigious positions. He was appointed court painter to Emperor Ferdinand II in Vienna, who sent him to England in 1637. There the artist met his compatriot Anthony van Dyck and came into contact with the Prince of Wales (the future King Charles II), who became one of his most important patrons. In 1648 the governor of Flanders, Archduke Leopold William, made him his court painter.
Wouters successfully translated the manner of his master Rubens into small-sized compositions characterised by a detailed and decorative style that mostly came into its own in his landscapes and mythological and allegorical scenes. Wouters was one of the most prominent exponents of this type of cabinet painting, which was used to adorn the chambers of curiosity so popular at the time at princely courts.
