“Too many ideal things in reality, too many have been erased. And now I do not have images or even potential ideas. I am truly an abstract painter. I used to think I could get by in hatred, storing up negative energy as a way of feeling alive. But I see that it is only a reaction, a stomach ache, as it were. And that suffering is always a futile task. What stands in front of me is no longer worth anything. And only with this absence can I expunge the hateful figure of time and his supporters.”
Letter to Enzo Brunori, 10 November 1986
