Since the early sixties Richard Artschwager has investigated the hybrid realm where the fictive and the real intermingle in order to question the nature of the work of art and our experience of it. The conceptual basis underlying Artschwager’s apparently simple works is a sleight of mind which requires the viewer to see reality as illusion, illusion as reality.
Artschwager concocted little sculptures to give a room’s walls, corners and fixtures a new function for art. The resonance between the thesis and the antithesis of reality and illusion, absolute and relative, static and moving , art and life, is the essential synthesis which motivates Artschwager’s seemingly inert works, and the resonance produces in us a disquieting tension.
