album with 177 photographs, vintage, albumen prints (2 heliotypes), laid down on 28 album cards affixed to two sides, ranging from 7.5 x 10.7 to 14.3 x 20.5 cm, in original leather binding with gold embossing, gilt edging, in addition, 1 loose photograph with photographer’s note, L. Mioni, and a double sheet with handwritten index for the album, some foxing to the cards.
Some years later, in 1894, the H. I. M. S. ‘Donau’’s second life began. The plan was to use the ship specifically for missionary voyages. The first journey began on 2 September setting out from Pola (Pula). The ship visited Tangiers, Tenerife, St Louis in Senegal, Dakar, Freetown in Sierra Leone, Lagos, Duala, arriving in Bahia on 7 February 1895. It traversed the southern Atlantic, reaching Cape Town on 14 March 1895, sailing onwards to Martinique. On 27 June, the H. I. M. S. ‘Donau’ arrived in New York, to take part in the festivities surrounding the USA’s Declaration of Independence. From: the website of the Austro-Hungarian navy.
