Attributed to Benjamin von Block
(Lübeck 1631-1690 Regensburg),
Portrait of the future Emperor Joseph I (1678-1711) as King of Hungary,
oil on canvas, 79 x 64 cm, unframed
In 1687, Archduke Joseph, then nineteen years old, was crowned King of Hungary and in 1690, he was crowned German king. Hence the painting must have been executed between 1687 and 1690. In 1709, Joseph succeeded his father Leopold I as emperor.
The attribution to Benjamin von Block is based on a comparison of the present painting with a secure work by Block depicting the future Emperor Joseph I as archduke at the age of six (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna). Due to his early death, portraits by Joseph I are rare.
