A buffet, - Design

designed by Josef Hoffmann for the guest house of the Wittgenstein family’s “Poldi-Hütte” in Kladno, 1912/14, manufactured by J. & J. Kohn, 1913, stained and matted beech wood, glass, marble top, black polished columns, the doors decorated with raised pattern of squares, height 169 cm, length 194 cm, depth 70 cm. (DR) With a written confirmation of the provenance issued by Mirek Ambroz, curator of the exhibition Vienna Secession and Modernism 1900–1915, Exhibition Halls of the Municipal House, Prague 2005. Provenance: From the “Poldi-Hütte” in Kladno/Czechia. The guest house’s dinner table suite and the ceiling light designed for the “Poldi-Hütte” are preserved in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Karl Wittgenstein, the father of Ludwig Wittgenstein, was one of the most successful steel industrialists towards the end of the Danube monarchy. Together with his wife, Leopoldine, he was a generous patron of contemporary art. He named his still mill “Poldi-Hütte” in Kladno after his wife. Josef Hoffmann was commissioned to furnish the entire guest house and his designs were manufactured by J. & J. Kohn.
