2012, for Nanimarquina, Spain, New Zealand wool, handtufted, 46.500 knots/m2, acrylic paint in drip painting technique, signed, 172 x 248 cm, height 20 mm. (DR)

A unique piece. Accompanied by a certificate.

Part of the installation “Still Life with Light”, a living environment conceived for Kolletiven Weingenuss, including a sideboard, a carpet, a light installation, and an earthenware vessel. Realized for the Vienna Design Week 2012.

Lit.: Vienna Design Week 2012. Review, Vienna 2013, pp. 23–31.

“The idea of a painted rug is not new. I remember Brigitte Rambaud commenting me about certain regions of East Europe having tradition of painting rugs for economical reasons. Trompe l’oil is a technique not only applied in architecture but in quite different contexts. One of the most essential examples I know is the painting of the black stripes on a donkey to emulate a zebra in the Gaza zoo. But Painted Rug is not trying to create a substitute but to explore the possibilities of drip painting as a graffiti in a rug, a rug that during that action and because the action is transformed into a canvas. Painted Rug is a sketch of a rug that per se is a rug”. (Marti Guixé)
