A drinking service, Model No. 248, “Sagmeister on Loos”,

A drinking service, Model No. 248, “Sagmeister on Loos”, - Design

designed by Stefan Sagmeister in 2011 for J. & L. Lobmeyr, Vienna, tumblers based on a design by Adolf Loos from 1931, the bottoms with hand-painted motifs of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Virtues, covered with a black and white enamel layer respectively, with Lobmeyr emblem, height 9.3 cm, diameter 7.5 cm. (DR) From the first realized series. The service was subsequently produced with modified images. Provenance: Coll. J. & L. Lobmeyr, Vienna. Exhibited in: Vienna Design Week, September 2011. In his last letter to Lobmeyr, written in 1931, Adolf Loos suggested alternatives for the traditional bottom stars adorning the tumblers of his service. A purist, he suggested engraving “a butterfly, a fly, a nude human figure, small animals, etc.…” On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of this classic series of glasses, Lobmeyr commissioned Stefan Sagmeister to develop this idea further. Sagmeister chose the subject of the Seven Deadly Sins (black) and the Seven Virtues (white). The Seven Deadly Sins: wrath – pistol; lust – breasts; gluttony – place setting; sloth – bed; greed – gold bars; pride – lion; envy – eye; The Seven Virtues: patience – clock; chastity – chastity belt; temperance – measuring cup; diligence – bees; charity – hands; humility – mouse; kindness – heart.
