Bonalumi is regarded as one of the most important artists of the Italian avant-garde. In the mid-1950s, Bonalumi met Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani with whom he would subsequently exhibit in 1958. His monochrome works on shaped canvases, to which the present work belongs, reflect a strong artistic trend in 1960s Italy. Many artists associated with the Zero group experimented with the boundaries of the image area. Agostino Bonalumi executed works characterised by their monochromy and geometrical shapes. In these extended works between painting and sculpture, structure becomes the tactile experience, the effect of light and shadow.
