The present painting, which has not appeared on the market since 1967, is an important work by Janneck and in terms of quality is equal to those by Johann Georg Platzer. In the 1730s, Janneck moved from Graz to Vienna, where he studied at the Academy and was among the first to be called “honorarii”. In 1752/54, Janneck was one of the Academy’s assessors, together with Paul Troger and Michelangelo Unterberger. He was a versatile artist and painted genre scenes, religious subjects, landscapes, and portraits. With his mostly small-sized cabinet pictures, Janneck ranks among the most outstanding Austrian artists of the 18th century.
