Jacob Melchior van Herck

Jacob Melchior van Herck - Old Master Paintings

(active in Antwerp 1691–1735)
Flora, an Allegory of Spring,
oil on canvas, 110 x 142.2 cm, framed

We are grateful to Fred Meijer for identifying the present painting as a work by Van Herck.

Van Herck, one of the most sought-after flower painters of his period in Antwerp, was the brother-in-law and student of Gaspar Pieter Verbruggen the Elder. According to documentary evidence, Van Herck joined the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1691. Having been appointed master in 1694, he was the guild’s chairman between 1720 and 1735. Verbruggen’s opulent flower still lifes remained an important source of inspiration for the painter in terms of both composition and motifs. A composition by Van Herck closely related to the present painting was sold at Christie’s, London, in December 2004. For the figure of the woman, Fred Meijer has suggested an attribution to François Liberti.
